“Africu Vecchiu”: Journey Among the Ruins of the Aspromontane Village

Experiences Art and culture Activities

"The old village, even from the moment of its definitive abandonment, remains connected through a trail, which still needs to be taken today to visit the place. In reality, a proper drivable road has never reached it, and this contributes, if possible, to give even more charm to a place that is already beautiful in itself due to its location and the panoramas it offers during the visit.
ITINERARY:
Deciding to visit the village, you can undertake a clockwise tour, starting from the Park Gate, then continuing on a dirt road and taking the first right turn, thus descending to the Campusa locality, exactly on the south side of Puntone della Guardia.
After a few hairpin turns, the view immediately opens to a part of the village, with a row of old houses, shelters for animals, but already in the distance, you can see the complex of elementary schools recognizable by the sign placed on top; you reach it after passing an old mill. The pavement is all in stone and well visible, as are the alleys that until recently were overgrown with brambles, and like several mansions, the nursery, and the old Carabinieri barracks encountered before reaching the church of San Nicola and subsequently the Calvary.
Now ascending from the old path through a forest of oaks and chestnuts, you reach the old church of San Leo. The church has a single nave, a simple architecture, with the bell tower in the foreground for two bells and represents the destination of a pilgrimage that the inhabitants of Africo Nuovo undertake on May 5th every year. This point is a true spectacle; turning towards the valley means laying your eyes on a series of valleys and easily recognizable peaks, such as the La Verde stream and M. Scapparrone, while turning around, you can admire right behind the church, M. Iofri with its unmistakable profile. On days with optimal visibility in the northwest direction, it is possible to see, in the distance, two tongues of water and foam three hundred meters apart, belonging respectively to the Aposcipo stream and the Ferraina stream; these are waterfalls developed downstream of Palmarello and Forgiarelle.
Returning on our steps on a mule track nestled between rocks that ascends, showing additional panoramas and mountains including Montalto. The hillside you follow will be on the north side of Puntone della Guardia and will allow you to close the loop quickly and return to the starting point."
