The historical reenactment

Throughout the peasant scenario, the donkey, also known as the ass or burro, has always been the faithful companion of man, whether farmer or merchant. Symbol of humility and tenacity, it has always assisted man in the daily toils, constituting the backbone of rural economy until the advent of motorization. In its humility, the donkey was the "poor man's horse" of the peasants. They preferred it to the horse because it served the same functions as the noble quadruped, with the only difference being that it was less expensive, as it was content with little from a dietary point of view. Perhaps the ignoble consideration of the gentle animal led it to be mistreated, scorned, and worse, beaten by all. But who would have ever imagined that precisely that amusing animal, with its grayish color and long ears, would one day compete in a race like its antagonist horse has always done? In Guardavalle, a town straddling two provinces, the donkey has been competing for eight editions in what has now become a tradition, the "Palio del Ciuccio" (Donkey Palio). Guardavalle calls together its districts to face off and compete with the collaboration of our friend, the donkey. The districts will challenge each other in the race, the Palio, but also in skills, disciplines of combat, and abilities that represented the Middle Ages.
