NATURALISTIC ITINERARY
This itinerary allows you to cross Calabria horizontally, from the Ionian to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The excursion is managed by a trekking association that operates in the area. A journey across the Aspromonte plains, within the territory of the Aspromonte National Park, is both charming and captivating. From the plains, our gaze can rest upon the eastern side of Aspromonte, with its promontories that, starting from the flat peaks typical of Aspromonte due to sudden geological movements, stretch to the sea, gently descending until it touches the shoreline in some points.
The starting point is Monte Due Mari, a name that reveals its nature, as it allows a view of both seas bathing Calabria, the Tyrrhenian to the west and the Ionian to the east. Through forest paths, we will traverse majestic beech forests, pine groves, and oak woods. The route is gentle, with not too much elevation gain, allowing us to enjoy the walk and the wonderful woods of Aspromonte, its white rocks, and in the distance, the blue sea.
About halfway through the journey, we will reach the area of Aria del Vento, where we can gaze upon the most famous rocks of Aspromonte: the queen, Pietra Cappa, a monolith among the largest in Europe; Monte Tre Pizzi, a rock formation with three rocky spurs; and the highest mountains of Aspromonte, Montalto 1955 m, Monte Scorda 1572, and Monte Misafumera 1390.
Continuing the route, we will move to the Tyrrhenian side, where we can see in the distance a portion of the Piana di Gioia Tauro, a plain to the west of the Aspromonte massif. Interchanging paths along the Aspromonte ridge, we will return to the starting point, closing a loop. To conclude the day, we will move to Rifugio il Boschetto, a human settlement in the midst of a forest of beech and oak trees.
